things to do in downtown las vegas

Downtown Las Vegas.

Most people who visit Las Vegas tend to visit the Strip, the home of high rise hotels and casinos, and pricey restaurants and shopping. But, there is a cheaper option to the Strip: downtown Las Vegas. Downtown has been getting a little bit of revitalization. It's still not as flashy as the Strip but it has its charms.

If you ever find yourself in downtown, these are my suggestions (other than gambling):

Fremont Street - I still remember a time when vehicles went through it. These days, it is a covered pedestrian walkway. The cover, which is at least three or four city blocks long, provides much needed shade, especially during the hot summer months. At night, the cover turns into a giant screen that projects videos or other computer generated visual displays (free to watch).

Day or night, many street performers showcase their talents on Fremont Street. At night, a few stages located along the street host plenty of cover bands (free to watch) that will likely bring many hours of blissful nostalgia.

For those with an adventurous spirit, you may also choose to zip line the length of the covered portion of Fremont Street and fly above the madness.

It is free to roam through Fremont Street.

Container Park - Past the covered walkway of Fremont Street is a small shopping area with a big playground. The draw is that the shops and part of the playground are made from repurposed shipping containers.

In addition to the above, these are a few other suggestions that I have not personally visited:

Mob Museum - I had every intention of visiting this museum because it seemed like a fascinating place. But, I had a hard time parting with $19.95 to get a ticket. If you are similarly loathed to part with a big chunk of change, I suggest entering the building and browsing through the gift shop. I learned a thing or two about the building just by doing that.

Gold and Silver Pawn Shop - Apparently, this shop is featured on a popular TV show called, Pawn Stars, and many people line up to go in. I am not a shopper (nor a watcher of the show) so I had no interest in visiting but, if you are a fan of the show, it is a short walk from downtown.

Have you visited downtown Las Vegas? What are your favorite things to do there?

  1. I've actually been to the pawn shop and it's worth a visit if you like the tv show. the "characters" from the show aren't there anymore and due to the show's success, there is a lot of merchandising - i.e., bobbleheads of the guys from the show, t-shirts, etc. On the show, they don't show this stuff so I'm not sure how they are filming anymore. The show is obviously staged now, but it is still entertaining.
