(Paris, France). L'Avant Comptoir was a lovely wine and tapas bar in the St. German-des-pres area and was a perfect place to grab a casual lunch or refreshment after a day of shopping and/or sightseeing in the area. The tripadvisor reviews were consistently great - see here.
Some quick tips:
- To get to the wine bar, walk through the take-away area (where they do takeaway sandwiches and stuff) and go through the plastic panels. Don't confuse the wine bar with the sit-down restaurant next door.
- It's standing room only but try to get a spot at the counter. The bread and butter and pickles are complimentary. Just order some charcuterie and other tasty tapas and make a grand meal out of it. (The butter is delicious!)
- Some of the servers spoke a little english but you can get away with just pointing to the "menu items" hung throughout the ceiling with pictures.
- Bring a big appetite! Like total idiots, we came here after we ate a huge lunch so we were really only able to eat some ham croquettes and enjoy some rose. Such a shame. We would definitely return next time we are in Paris.
