galeries lafayette: go for the view, not the shopping

(Paris, France).  Galeries Lafayette is a high-end department store with a flagship store on Haussmann in an absolutely gorgeous building with an impressive glass dome.   It is definitely worth a visit just to go onto the terrace and get rewarded with a lovely view of Paris (and the Opera House).  However, shopping here is kind of a challenge, and here is why...
There are crazy crazy crowds - especially on the 1st level (handbags and cosmetics).  They literally bus in hundreds of tourists, particularly Chinese tourists.  While I love to shop and I am all for the stimulation to the global economy, it is not fun shopping alongside hundreds of tour groups trying to get Chanel and Louis Vuitton bags.  You can't even get into certain stores without standing in line for at least 30 minutes.  It's like trying to get into a Las Vegas nightclub (ok - maybe not THAT bad, but close).

After being repelled by the crazy crowds and lines, I decided to do some skincare shopping but I couldn't even do that.  There were literally tour groups, with a guide holding up a flag, meandering through the maze of skincare and cosmetic stalls.  I couldn't even try perfume on peacefully without getting jostled about.

However, if you are looking to buy clothes, then you are in luck.  There is an amazing array of choices for fashion and they are located on the higher floors away from the crazy crowds.  (Note - the men's shop is located in an adjacent building.)

For me shopping should be therapeutic and relaxing and that was definitely not the experience here.  I would recommend going to the St. Germain area, the Montmartre area, or even the Champs Elysee for shopping.

On the flip side, here are some good things about coming here:

First, the terrace view is lovely, and it's not terribly crowded.  You can go up there and enjoy a beverage or ice cream treat and just enjoy the warm weather.  And the stained glass dome is an incredible sight too (from the inside).

Second, there is a tax refund desk here so if you are able to brave the crowds and shop here, you can take care of the paperwork at the store instead of at the airport.  (You still have to go to customs and turn in the paperwork at the airport, however.)

Third, there is a Pierre Hermes kiosk here in case you need to buy some macarons as souvenirs.  It is located on the first floor.

Fourth, they actually have a location to hold your luggage, which can be useful for anyone who is shopping on the way to the airport.

Fifth, if you don't have time to find a French pharmacy there is one located in the Galeries Lafayette so you can pick up your French pharmacy essentials (i.e., Bioderma, Vichy, etc.).

Random note - there is a food court and several restaurants located in the Galeries Lafayette, but there's better food elsewhere.
