flying out of bgy? visit bergamo

Bergamo.
Many travelers who use budget airlines, such as Ryanair, fly in and out of BGY (Bergamo airport) on their way in or out of Milan. In the process, many of them skip Bergamo, a small and quaint town in its own right.

If you have an early flight out of BGY, note that the airport is about an hour away from Milan and taxis could be expensive. So, I highly recommend an overnight (or a bit longer) stay in Bergamo by taking the train into town from Milano Centrale the day before a flight and taking a shorter taxi ride to BGY the following day.

The city is divided into an upper and lower area. The old town is located in Citta Alta (the upper town). There, you will find medieval, Renaissance and some modern architecture.

For meals, plenty of restaurants serve the area including Damimmo, which serves casonsei, a type of ravioli filled with meat (most likely pork) and topped with lots of bacon, sage and other aromatic herbs.

Even for a short visit, it is well worth it.

What other small "overlooked" cities do you think are worth a visit?
