restaurant review: je-ngor kitchen in lat krabang

Seafood Spring Roll.

Staying near Bangkok International Airport (BKK) does not have to be a drag. It may not be near the fun Bangkok night markets and restaurants and streets, but this area, called Lat Krabang, can still be proud of its seafood offering, thanks to Je-Ngor Kitchen.

The Scene
Je-Ngor.
Located on the second floor of the Paseo Mall, it looked like the restaurant catered to well-to-do suburbanites and expats alike. The place was large and open. It really had no ambiance. Some might even say that our dining experience was not authentic. But, I say, well-to-do folks living in the suburbs are just as local and eat as authentically as those who thrive on street food. In fact, when I dined here with the hubs, we were treated to some local pageant just outside the restaurant. It sure was fun to people watch.

The Service

The folks here were really nice. They spoke some English but the menus had pictures so it was easy to order. After we settled our bill, they were also very generous in giving us a box of regular sized bao for free. I don't recall them giving out baos to diners in general, and I suspect it was because I was taking so many pictures of the food. Seriously though, every where I have traveled, I have witnessed so many acts of generosity by people I've met. And, our gratis box of bao from Je-Ngor Kitchen was but one of many, many examples.

The Food

  • Seafood Spring Roll (pictured above) - basically a fish ball, it was crisp outside and soft inside. It was also served with a sweet dipping sauce.

  • Crab Curry - I enjoyed this rich and meaty dish especially because we did not have to work hard to remove the meat from the shell.

Crab Curry.

  • Prawns in Garlic, Salt and Pepper - It's really hard to complain when eating crisp garlic like chips, and then pairing the addictive garlic with meaty prawns.

Prawns.

  • Crispy Noodles with Pork - we could taste a hefty portion of MSG in this dish. But, I suspect, that is why it had a lot of umami.

The Price

Unsurprisingly, this meal was not cheap. But, in the grand scheme of things our "splurge" meal set us back just $35 - the price of a few cups of Starbucks coffee in the US.

The Verdict

I enjoyed my meal at Je-Ngor. Just don't expect the ambiance, if you do decide to go.
