restaurant review: carson kitchen in las vegas

Carson Kitchen.

Recently, the powers that be have been revitalizing downtown Las Vegas. As part of that effort, many entrepreneurs have opened up shop in town. Carson Kitchen, helmed by celebrity chef Kerry Simon, was one of them. Located in an old motel within walking distance off Fremont Street, Mr. Sazy Rock and I decided to set up a business lunch there. These are my thoughts:

The Scene

Even during lunch, the place was lively. Although there were tables were diners could sit with their own group, the small-ish dining area was dominated by two communal tables and bar seating overlooking the bar and the kitchen. We were seated in one of the communal tables, which had uncomfortable high chairs.

The Food

The server told me that they serve the same menu for lunch and dinner.

  • Crispy Chicken Skins - Always a good starter, the skins were crisp with a hint of paprika and sea salt. The dish came with a honey sauce although if I had a choice, I would have preferred the skins dipped in vinegar with crushed garlic and maybe a red chili pepper. The skin was a also a bit too fatty, which I think could have been avoided by rendering the skin under very low heat before deep frying. That being said, I still enjoyed munching on them.

  • Bacon Jam - I'm a fan of bacon but I thought the jam was too acidic for my liking. The baked brie on top was delicious though....

  • Devil's Eggs - Although the eggs were a bit too fridge fresh (too cold), they were perfectly cooked, i.e., none of that gray on the yolk's ring. Topped with pancetta and caviar, they were decadent.

  • Wellington Empanadas - Although I liked the taste of the beef and mushroom stuffing inside puff pastry, I expected an empanada, which is normally made from some type of dough.

  • Gyro Tacos - the lamb was perfectly cooked and the accoutrements sharp and fresh.

  • Veal Meatballs - The meatballs were creamy but a bit mushy inside.

The Service

The host and servers were friendly and helpful.

The Price

We ordered most of the starters and were quite full afterwards. They were moderately priced with prices ranging from $6 to $12.

The Verdict

The food was good but not remarkable. But, for the area, it's a fun place to eat better. We did not make any reservations. But, if you wish, you may do so by calling (702) 473-9523.

  1. The place is awesome. Through http://las-vegas.hotelscheap.org/ I had booked a hotel that was really close to this one and I found it by accident. Really nice place!
